In the last 25 years, Dr. Sanduk Ruit and his team have continuously struggled to fight against the barriers of modern cataract surgery in the community. Dr. Ruit and his team simplified conventional extracapsular cataract extraction with lens implantation, making it appropriate for local conditions. They also modified and simplified the use of high quality small incision cataract (SICS) surgery in the community. Dr. Ruit was one of the founders of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) and a co-founder and director of the Himalayan Cataract Project. The TIO, in close conjunction with partners including the Fred Hollows Foundation, is spreading this very effective and proudly Nepalese system to many parts of Africa, South America, and various countries in the Asia-Pacific.
